Suspect in fraudulent truck rentals arrested in Guelph

A Quebec man believed to be involved in a series of fraudulent truck rentals was arrested in Guelph after an employee recognized his photo.

Approximately 5:20 p.m. Wednesday police were called to a business on Stone Road West where a man had presented an Alberta driver’s license while attempting to rent a U-Haul truck. The employee recognized the photo on the licence from a number of fraudulent rentals in which the vehicles were not returned.

Officers arrived and arrested the man, seizing a Quebec driver’s licence as well as the Alberta licence with a fake name. It is believed the man was involved in at least five U-Haul rentals using various aliases in Waterloo Region and Quebec.

A 33-year-old Quebec man was arrested for fraud over $5,000 and possessing an identity document in another name. He was held for a bail hearing Thursday. (Occurrence number GU26021017)

 

Knife pulled on security

A Guelph teen faces a weapons charge after mall security officers had a knife pulled on them Wednesday.

Just after noon, security at Stone Road Mall was escorting a male from the mall when he pulled out a knife with a 13-centimetre blade and pointed it at them. He continued to taunt them with the knife while leaving the property. Officers arrived quickly and arrested the male.

A 15-year-old Guelph boy is charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He will appear in court May 13. (Occurrence number GU26020943)

 

Arrest in trafficking investigation

A Guelph man was arrested Wednesday during a cocaine trafficking investigation.

In late February, an undercover Guelph Police Service officer purchased a quantity of cocaine. Approximately 9:45 p.m. Wednesday officers observed two people in a vehicle near Eastview Road and Summit Ridge Drive. The passenger was arrested.

A 32-year-old Guelph man is charged with trafficking cocaine and possession for the purpose of trafficking. He was held for a bail hearing Thursday. (Occurrence number GU26021058)

 

Two dangerous trucks taken off road

Two heavy trucks were taken off the road Wednesday during random spot checks of commercial motor vehicles.

A member of the Guelph Police Service Traffic Unit conducted three random checks. Two of the three trucks were found to have significant safety defects, including broken suspension components, insecure exhausts and defective brake lights. One of the trucks was repaired on-site by a mechanic and allowed to continue, while the other was ordered off the road until the necessary repairs can be undertaken.

Four charges were laid for driving a commercial motor vehicle with major or minor defects and failing to ensure performance standards are met.

The Guelph Police Service Traffic Unit conducts random checks of commercial motor vehicles to ensure the safety of all road users. (Occurrence number GU26020950)
