Additional Homecoming patrols cost $73k
Additional police patrols related to the University of Guelph’s Homecoming in September amounted to just over $73,000.
Of this, the university paid more than $18,000 with the rest coming from the Guelph Police Service budget.
The Guelph Police Service, Guelph Fire Department, Guelph Wellington Paramedic Service, City of Guelph Bylaw Enforcement and University of Guelph Campus Safety Office all deployed additional resources September 28 for Homecoming festivities.
Sections of Chancellors Way and Edinburgh Road South were closed from 4 p.m. until early morning as thousands participated in an unsanctioned gathering. Several Liquor Licence Act charges were laid and several people were transported to hospital due to intoxication. Approximately 11:30 p.m. fireworks were discharged in the crowd however no injuries were reported.
Bylaw officials responded to more than 40 noise complaints across the city between noon September 28 and 4 a.m. the next day.
In the only major incident of the day, just after 9 p.m. an Etobicoke male approached an officer in the area of Edinburgh Road South and Chancellors way and reported that he had been stabbed in the abdomen during an altercation with unknown parties. The male was transported to hospital for treatment of his injury. The investigation is ongoing.
