Assault, weapons charges after officer punched in face

A Guelph man faces assault and weapons charges after a police officer was punched in the face while making an arrest Thursday.

Approximately 10 a.m. members of the OPP’s Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) unit were at a north-end hotel looking for a man wanted for mischief over $5,000 and several counts of breaching court orders. The suspect saw officers and tried to flee out a rear door.

An officer tried to stop him but he grabbed her tactical vest and punched her in the face. More officers placed the male under arrest as he continued to struggle and not comply with demands. Following his arrest officers located a spring-assisted knife inside a bag he was wearing.

The officer sustained a minor injury but did not require medical assistance.

A 40-year-old Guelph man is further charged with assault police, resisting arrest, possessing a prohibited weapon, breaching a weapons prohibition and several counts of breaching probation. He was held for a bail hearing Friday.

Wanted man arrested after erratic driving

A man already wanted for missing a court date for dangerous driving was arrested Thursday after he was spotted driving erratically.

Just after 8:30 a.m. a rented blue Mitsubishi was travelling at a high rate of speed and swerving around other traffic in the area of Speedvale Avenue and the Hanlon Expressway. The vehicle was located a short time later parked at an address on Speedvale Avenue West near Woolwich Street.

Officers gained permission from the homeowner to enter the home. The suspect was located by members of the Guelph Police Service Tactics and Rescue Unit hiding under the kitchen sink behind a false wall.

A 33-year-old Guelph man is charged with dangerous driving, driving while suspended and failing to attend court. He was held for a bail hearing Friday.

Impaired, dangerous and stunt driving

A Guelph woman faces impaired, dangerous and stunt driving charges following a traffic stop Thursday night.

Just after 11 p.m. a member of the Guelph Police Service Traffic Unit was patrolling on Gordon Street near Arkell Road when he clocked a car travelling 113 km/h in a posted 50 km/h zone. He pulled the car over and observed open alcohol containers and cannabis inside the vehicle.

The driver had an odour of alcohol on her breath and was showing signs of impairment. After failing a roadside test she was transported to the police station, where further tests confirmed she had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in her system.

A search of the vehicle revealed several open alcohol containers, cannabis, THC gummies and psilocybin, all within reach of the driver.

A 25-year-old Guelph woman is charged with impaired operation, dangerous driving, stunt driving, speeding and possessing a controlled substance. She will appear in court April 15.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.
