Man arrested in LCBO robbery

A Guelph man who brandished a knife while stealing alcohol last May has been arrested for robbery.

On May 25, 2024, three men entered the LCBO location near Gordon Street and Wellington Street and began concealing bottles inside a reusable bag.

As one of the men began walking out of the store, a security guard confronted him and stood in his path. The man brandished a knife, which he pointed at the employee before leaving the store. More than $1,600 worth of alcohol was stolen.

A 24-year-old Guelph man was arrested Friday for robbery and breaching a bail order. He was held for a bail hearing March 14.

 

Downtown business entered

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a downtown business was entered Friday evening.

On Friday morning, employees of a business near Quebec Street and Baker Street arrived to find a glass front door smashed, however it did not appear entry was gained. Staff covered the broken window with boards and continued business for the day.

All employees left at approximately 6:30 p.m., but when the owner came back two hours later to drop something off the boards had been removed.

A laptop, coffee maker and a large number of personal care items had been stolen. The suspect also stole a laundry hamper, which was likely used to carry the other items. The stolen items are valued at approximately $3,000.

Bouncer knocked out

A Guelph man was arrested after a bouncer at a downtown bar was knocked out while trying to break up a fight early Sunday.

Approximately 3:20 a.m. emergency services were called to Carden Street. Investigation revealed two males were involved in a physical altercation when a security staff member intervened. One of the men grabbed the employee and threw him to the ground, where he struck his head and briefly lost consciousness.

A 21-year-old Guelph man was arrested at the scene for assault. He will appear in court May 20.

 

Tools stolen from business

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after thousands of dollars in tools were stolen from an east-end business.

On Sunday morning police were called to a business near York Road and Watson Road South. A hole had been cut in a fence to gain access to the yard, then a lock on a storage container was cut off.

Tools valued at between $3,000 and $5,000 were stolen.

Possible arson attempt under investigation

The Guelph Police Service is investigating following an apparent arson attempt early Saturday.

Approximately 5:25 a.m. a resident of an apartment building on Speedvale Avenue East reported hearing someone smash his neighbour’s window and then smelling smoke.

Officers spoke to the resident of a ground-floor unit. She said someone was at her door yelling, then a short time later she heard a window breaking and an item on fire was thrown into the unit. The tenant was able to quickly douse the flames.
