Arrest in home break-in

A Guelph man has been arrested after an east-end home was broken into last month.

Approximately 3 a.m. October 8, a male gained entry to an unlocked garage in the area of Starwood Drive and Watson Parkway North and stole a golf push cart and a number of tools.

Through investigation the male was identified by members of the Guelph Police Service Break Enter Auto Theft Unit. On Monday morning he was located in the area of York Road and Elizabeth Street and arrested.

A 47-year-old Guelph man is charged with break and enter, trespass by night and breaching a probation order. He will appear in court December 31. None of the stolen property, valued at approximately $800, has been recovered.

More than $6k lost in job scam

Residents are reminded to be very cautious when dealing with unknown parties online after a Guelph man lost more than $6,000 through an employment scam.

The victim in his 50s received a message from an unknown sender inviting him to interview for a data entry position, and subsequently participated in an interview by text. Following the ‘interview,’ the man was told he had secured the job but needed specific equipment including a laptop and iPhone.

He received a cheque via email and was told to deposit it to his account using a mobile app, then provided a list of vendors to whom funds should be sent to purchase the required equipment.

Eventually the victim learned the cheques were fraudulent and he had lost $6,245.

Residents are encouraged to be wary of any telephone call, email or text received from a sender not personally known by you, especially if the sender is asking you to take immediate action or provide funds or personal information.

Anyone who suspects they have been the victim of cybercrime or fraud should report it to their local police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s online reporting system or by phone at 1-888-495-8501. Even if no financial loss has been sustained, interactions can still be reported to the CAFC.

Impaired charge for passed-out driver

A Guelph man is charged with impaired driving after he was caught passed out in a running vehicle early Tuesday.

Just after midnight police were called to a parking lot on Bagot Street after a witness observed a vehicle parked erratically and a male passed out in the driver’s seat. Officers arrived a short time later and found the male still asleep and the vehicle running.

Officers opened the door and woke the male, noting a strong odour of alcohol on his breath. He was unsteady on his feet and confused about what was going on.

The male was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

A 48-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired operation. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court December 6.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.
