Arrest in bottle assault at university
An Oakville man faces an assault charge after a bottle was thrown into a crowd on the University of Guelph campus in September.
The early morning of September 28, a first-year student attended a large outdoor gathering on campus. Approximately 2:30 a.m. another male threw a large glass bottle into the air and towards the crowd, striking the victim in the head.
The victim sought medical attention on campus and then attended Guelph General Hospital, where he was told he had sustained a concussion and would require stitches.
Following investigation by the Campus Safety Office and Guelph Police Service, an 18-year-old Oakville man – who is not a university student – was arrested this week for assault causing bodily harm. He will appear in court December 17.
Witnesses sought after break-in arrest
Residents of a south-end neighbourhood are being asked to check surveillance cameras and report any suspicious activity after a woman was arrested for trying to break into a home while the tenants were sleeping.
Approximately 12:40 a.m. police were called to a home near Ptarmigan Drive and Niska Road. Tenants were sleeping in their basement bedroom when they were awakened by sounds and discovered someone attempting to crawl through the window. They quickly were able to close and lock the window.
The tenants alerted their landlord, who lives upstairs. He went outside and could hear someone in a neighbouring yard. A canine track was unsuccessful, but just before 4 a.m. a resident of Niska Road reported someone on their security cameras walking around the property. Officers attended and found a woman hiding behind a shrub.
A 36-year-old Guelph woman is charged with break and enter and trespassing by night. She will appear in court December 17.
Residents of Ptarmigan Drive, Niska Road, Tanager Drive and Trendell Lane are asked to check their cameras from overnight and report anything suspicious to Constable Matt Jotham at 519-824-1212, ext. 7434, or via email to mjotham@guelphpolice.ca.
