Safety tips for the community
Recently, our community has seen a number of sexual assaults committed against strangers. We understand the fear these incidents have instilled in some community members and offer these safety tips.
Safety tips to consider:
- Walk with a purposeful stride. Know where you are going and walk with confidence
- Avoid isolated areas and try to use high-traffic, well-lit routes
- Don’t let other people get too close, even if they appear to have a reason such as asking for the time
- When possible, dress in clothing and shoes that allow you to move quickly
- Pack light and keep essentials separate. Overloading yourself can draw attention and make you appear vulnerable. Consider storing small essentials such as keys, ID, cell phone and a small amount of money in separate pockets to lessen the risk of loss
- If you think you are being followed by a person, switch direction or cross the street. Walk toward an open store, lighted house or an area with other people. If in a park or other isolated area, take advantage of any passerby by turning towards the person following you and saying “Are you following me?” in a loud, clear voice. Never be embarrassed to yell for help
- If you think that you’re being followed or harassed by someone in a car, do not approach it. Turn around and quickly walk in the opposite direction
- Make sure others are aware of your travel plans and expected arrival time and check in with them when you get there
- Keep distractions to a minimum when using your phone or electronic devices! Pay attention to traffic, people around you and where you are going. Also, if using your phone, be aware of what information you might be revealing to anyone else able to hear your conversation
If you are confronted:
- If someone demands your property and has, or implies they have a weapon, do NOT resist. You have a greater chance of getting hurt if you do
- If someone tries to assault you, make a scene. Run away, scream and do whatever you can to get away and attract attention
- Try to remember a full description of the suspect, including anything that would make them stand out. If you are able, write down the description while it is fresh in your memory
Trust your instincts:
Trusting your own instincts can be your best tool. Pay attention to your ‘gut feelings’ and don’t be afraid to act on them. Report the incident to police as soon as possible at 519-824-1212, or 911 in an emergency.
